Allowed Foods

Many healthy and delicious foods are naturally gluten-free:

  • Beans, seeds, nuts in their natural, unprocessed form
  • Fresh eggs
  • Fresh meats, fish and poultry (not breaded, batter-coated or marinated)
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Most dairy products

A gluten-free diet is a diet that excludes foods containing gluten. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, malts, and triticale. It is used as a food additive in the form of a flavoring, stabilizing, or thickening agent, often as "dextrin".

Facts

Common Foods that Contain Gluten

Things with flour in them (white or wheat) are the most common culprits when you’re avoiding gluten. The following foods are among the more obvious edibles and beverages that are gluten packed:

  • Bagels
  • Beer
  • Bread
  • Cookies, cakes, and most other baked goods
  • Crackers
  • Pasta
  • Pizza

All these foods and drink are made with wheat or wheat flour, so they’re pretty easy to identify. But you need to watch out for foods that contain oats as well because, although they don’t contain gluten, the way they’re processed makes them inedible for gluten-intolerant people.

Health Benefits

  • On a gluten-free diet, you would likely eat more fruits and vegetables, just because it’s one of the few food sources available that is non-starchy, and almost completely gluten-free.
  • By eating only gluten-free foods, you will also be eliminating unhealthy oils from your diet, as well as unhealthy carbohydrates found in bread products like doughnuts and pastries.
  • Help reduce your risk of heart disease, certain cancers, and other health-related conditions, like diabetes, if you have a gluten intolerance.
